How to Choose the Best Cot & Cotbed Mattress For Your Baby

How to Choose the Best Cot & Cotbed Mattress For Your Baby

The mattress you choose for your new baby is an important decision and with so many options on the market this guide will give you the information you need to make correct choice for your baby.

The main choices are Foam, Fibre, Spring and Pocket Sprung.  These range in price with Foam being the cheapest option ranging up to Pocket Sprung as the luxury choice.  There are also some alternative options available including Bamboo core with its anti bacterial qualities and a new design from Pur Flow which consist of a liner stretched over a frame.  A very different concept which is aimed at children with allergies.

Foam
Foam mattresses are made from a high density foam and most can be cut to any size you require. There are varying degrees of ventilation from the head section which aids the circulation of air around baby's head and also allows for drainage of any liquids or fluids, particularly where newborn babies are concerned. To a mattress which is ventilated entirely from top to bottom, which allows circulation of air all over whatever the position of the baby is laid in the cot. With the "supervent" style mattresses there is usually a non toxic pvc sleeve which is adjustable anywhere over the mattress pad.

Fibre
This mattress is filled with the natural fibres from the coconut which are bound together with natural latex and then layered between foam. This offers comfort and resilience. This style of mattress offers excellent air flow and is of course environmentally friendly. However we have noticed a move away from this type of mattress for children with allergies or asthma symptoms.

Spring
The spring mattress is rather like your own sprung mattress and is made from coil springs which provide posture, support and durability which in tern is sandwiched between two layers of foam. The mattress is also fully breathable.

Pocket Sprung
This mattress is the ultimate in comfort and support made with a network of independent pocketed springs provides excellent support, helps prevent indentations and increases comfort as each spring responds individually to your child's sleeping position.

PurFlo Mattresses
The PurFlo mattress is available in two sizes to fit the most common cots or cotbeds. The PurFlo Mattress has a SleepSurface that allows free circulation of air around your child, and enables you to banish house Dust Mites and their excreta, which generate allergens linked to asthma, eczema and related diseases.

The SleepSurface is easily removed for washing at 60°C to eliminate allergens, bacteria and fungi. Conversely, traditional mattresses suffer, for example, from accumulations of allergens in their covers - which may be washable - and in their cores - from which they cannot be removed.

The PurFlo Mattress is safe for babies in the first few weeks after birth, when it is particularly important to ensure that they do not get too cold by virtue of its breathable surface, the mattress reduces the risk of overheating in older babies because it has lower thermal insulation than ordinary mattresses overheating, particularly when a baby has an acute infection, can be very dangerous the mattress prevents the pooling of exhaled carbon dioxide (CO2) and makes it less likely that this will be re-inhaled. There is evidence that in some circumstances rebreathing can be fatal to a baby.

All of these benefits make the PurFlo Mattress the most advanced defence against identified risks of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, and the best method to avoid allergens linked with Asthma, Eczema and related diseases.

These are just some of the options available and I hope that the information makes your decision a little easier. I would always recommend visiting your local independent nursery specialist who will be able to advice you on the best options.

How to Choose the Right Coil Baby Mattress For Your Infant

How to Choose the Right Coil Baby Mattress For Your Infant

Although the coil baby mattress is still the most popular type of crib mattress, that does not mean that it is any better than a foam baby mattress. You can find good quality mattresses of both types, but if you are interested in getting a coil baby mattress, here are a few things to look for to make sure you get the best one for your needs.

All baby mattresses are made in layers. With a coil baby mattress, the main layers to consider are the coil layer, the padding layer and the cushion layer.

The Cushion Layer

The cushion layer is what provides the softness to the baby mattress. Although it may be tempting to get a deep cushion layer, it is essential that it not be too soft so that your baby does not sink into it as this poses a risk of suffocation.

The Padding Layer

Also known as the insulator layer, the padding layer is what protects the cushion layer from the coil layer. This layer can be made of several different types of material and it is very important that you learn what is in the baby mattress you are buying.

Believe it or not, a material made from a part of the coconut shell is the best material for this layer. This material, called coir fibre, is formed into a pad and this pad is used to cover the coil layer. Although this is the most expensive type of padding layer, it is sturdy and is water resistant.

The more common type of pad used in the padding layer is made from scraps of various material, usually off the cutting room floor, pressed into a pad. These pads, often called fibre wrap, can feel softer than those made from coir fibre, but they tend to break down more easily over time. This can result in an uneven or lumpy baby mattress.

The Coils

Needless to say it is the steel coils that give the mattress its firmness and spring. These properties are dependent on both the number of springs and the thickness or gauge of the steel.

The lowest spring count that will provide a firm mattress is around 150. With more coils there is less space between them giving more even support. For the same gauge steel, the more coils the firmer the crib mattress. When you are shopping for the baby mattress, press on or squeeze the mattress to get a feel for the firmness.

If the steel coils are a heavier the gauge the mattress will be firmer. Gauges run from around 13 to 19, with 19 being the thinnest. Therefore a mattress with 200 springs with a steel gauge of 15 will be firmer than one with the same number of coils with a gauge of 19.

Finding a good combination of spring count and steel gauge is important in selecting a good baby crib mattress. One with a coil count of around 150 with a gauge of 13.5 will provide even and firm support and will be reasonably priced.

Support Bars

In addition to the layers, border support rods, found around the edges of the mattress, are available on some baby mattresses. These steel rods provide extra support so that when your baby begins to stand up in the crib the sides will not collapse.

When buying the right coil baby mattress for your needs, it comes down to finding a firm crib mattress with good support that you can afford. By using the information above you will know what to look for so you can more easily find a good quality baby mattress.
